My Village

The area that my village covered was a rectangle, but I don’t know how many square meters it was.

Around my village there was a small moat to protect the village. The only entrance to my village was in the middle of the south side.

The elementary school in my village was to the north of the village and separated by the moat, so we children needed to go to the school by walking out of the entrance in the south of the village and turning left or right and walking northward along the moat.

To the west of the west side of the moat was a vegetable garden that was for each family in the village. Every family was allocated a small piece of the garden that they could grow vegetables.

To the south of the village was a piece of land where there were many different types of trees. In the center of the land was a water well that supplied water for all the people in the village.

To the east of the village was a large area of farmland where the villagers grew many different crops, such as wheat, soybean, sorghum, corn…

Many years have passed. The garden has become a residential area, as well as the area south to the village with many trees. The elementary school no longer exists. The water well also goes nowhere.

How many people live in that village now? My hometown has also changed a lot. However, I have not been over 30 years.

The area that my village covered was [a rectangle | rectangular], but I don’t know how many square meters it was.

An alternative:
My village occupied a rectangular plot of land, but…

Around my village there was a small [protective moat | moat to protect the village].

The only entrance (to my village) was in the middle of the south side.

The elementary school infor my village was to the north of the village and separated by the moat, so we children needed to go to the school by [walking out of the entrance in the south of the village | exiting from the south] and turning left or right and walking northward along the moat.

Was the elementary school actually located in the village? If it was outside the village, I would change “in” to “for.”

To the west of the west side of the moat was a vegetable garden that was for each family in the village.

Every family was allocated a small [piece of | plot in] the garden that[where they could grow | for growing] vegetables.

To the south of the village was a [piece of land where there were many different types of trees | grove of trees].

In the center of the landgrove was a (water) well that supplied water for all the people in the village.

The first instance of “water” is unnecessary (because you later say it supplies water) and therefore sounds unnatural.

To the east of the village was a large area of farmland where the villagers grew many different crops, such as wheat, soybeans, sorghum, corn… ¶
, etc…¶

Many years have passed.

The garden has become a residential area, as well has [the area south tof the village with many trees | the grove of trees].

I re-formatted this correction to make it easier to read.

The elementary school no longer exists.

The water well also [goes nowhere].

Do you mean the well is still there but is dry? Or the well is gone?

How old do you think the moat around the village was? For example, was it built in the last century, or many centuries ago? I’m just wondering if moat-building was a relatively recent activity.

Rectangular. Occupied a rectangular plot of land. Protective moat. Exiting from. Grove of trees. As has sth.
The school is not in my village but outside my village. My original sentence is “the school of my village”, but the correction app modifies it to in for some reason that I don’t know.
The well no longer exists/is gone/disappeared.
Well, the last century was from 1900 to 2000. I guess the moat would be built at least in the early of last century or the time before last century. It’s definitely not a recent activity.
Thank you so much, Joe Tofu. I don’t know what to say to show my gratitude.

You’re welcome, Jack. From your reply I t’s clear that you’ve read my corrections closely and endeavored to learn from them, which shows me your appreciation of my effort and is gratitude enough. :-)

I’m amazed that people would go to the trouble of building a protective moat in the 1900s. What do you think they were seeking protection against—animals, or people?

Well, I am not sure if the moat was built at the beginning of last century or not. I prefer it to be built earlier than that. In order to answer your question, I did a lot of research on the internet, but there were not any resources that discussed moat origin.
My assumption is, in some periods of Chinese history, society was unrest because of bad governance. Therefore, the thieves, robbers and other criminals were rampant. So people had to build moats to protect themselves.
When I was a child, our village sometimes assigned some people to guard my village during nights. Every family in my village had dogs which could also protect my village.
I am sure that the moat was not built to protect against wild animals. Where I live is a large plain area. There are no wild beasts such as wolves, tigers, etc. The animals here are only livestock.
Anyway, China is pretty safe nowadays, and people’s living conditions have already improved a lot.
Thank you again, Joe Tofu. I appreciate your questions.

My Village

The area that my village covered was a rectangle, but I don’t know how many square meters it was.

better phrasing: "My village was (in) the shape of a rectangle"

Around my village there was a small moat to protect the village.

The only entrance to my village was in the middle of the south side.

The elementary school in my village was to the north of the village and separated by the moat, so we children needehad to go to the school by walking out of the entrance in the south side of the village and turning left or right and walking northward along the moat.

"Have" is more natural for when you have no other choice but to do something, given something else you've decided on. "Need" is more for something that is extremely important. An example with both in the same sentence: "We need to go to school, so we have to walk around the village." The "need" indicates that going to school is extremely important, and the "have" indicates that in order to do that, there is no option but to walk around the village.

This nuance can also be seen in "I have to go to the doctor" vs. "I need to go to the doctor". Likely contexts are "[I made an appointment, so] I have to go to the doctor" and "[I'm in pain, so] I need to go to the doctor".

To the west of the west side of the moat was a vegetable garden that was for each family in the village.

Every family was allocated a small piece of the garden thatwhere they could grow vegetables.
