When I was a child, my family had a yellow dog, the only dog I have had so far.
Families in my village decades ago all had a dog, sometimes even more. The dogs were considered to be able to protect families as they would bark loudly when they saw strangers and even some evil spirits.
At night, the dogs would bark loudly if some bad guys attempted to do bad things to our village, and then people could get out and check what was happening.
When I could remember our yellow dog, I was little, maybe only three to five years old. My dog was large but old, lazy and clumsy. It was not as energetic and agile as other dogs in the village.
Every autumn, people liked to catch hares in the fields, which was a good opportunity to see which dog was the fastest, bravest and most efficient. But my dog would always be the one lagging behind other dogs. Sometimes it didn’t even want to chase.
I guess it was because it was so old. It might have been in its seventies if it were a person. Its eyes were cloudy and sometimes there was eye discharge.
I had few memories of it before it died, but I won’t forget that my family once had an old yellow dog - the only dog I have had so far.

not really how this would be structured in English. If the point is to say that you had the dog at that age I would say it like above
Its eyes were cloudy and sometimes there was eye dischargegunk in them.
discharge is not wrong but a very 'medical' term. If you were just talking about your old dog's eyes you'd say something like eye 'gunk' or something like that. Discharge is too formal
