My Knowledge of Chinese Characters

I don't know about other native speakers, but I'd say my knowledge of Chinese characters is stagnating and not expanding as I grow older, even though I read widely. It reached its peak when I completed my college entrance exam.

I memorized many obscure characters while preparing for the exam. After graduating from high school, I just don't see the necessity of learning new words. I think my current lexical resource is sufficient for me to express myself effectively and coherently in various contexts. As for how to speak and write eloquently and beautifully, I suppose sometimes it's more about word choice than having an extensive vocabulary.

I've heard that the number of commonly used Chinese characters is around 3000, and the average adult native speaker knows between 3500 and 4500. I've taken an online test that suggests I know approximately 4700 to 5000 characters. However, I'm unsure if it's accurate or if I've been regressing.

I think learning new Chinese words must be very hard. I don't think I would be able to remember so many symbols easily.

Strong writing and very relatable post. I felt this way during my first year of college.
My take on it: once you've amassed a considerable amount of vocabulary, the focus shifts more towards mastering the craft of the language vs. acquiring the building blocks, so it's only natural that you're not learning new words at the rate you were going previously. I still think learning new words is beneficial, but vocab is merely a component of developing good writing/speaking, not the end-all be-all.

A slightly more natural choice.

I feel the same way about English vocabulary. I recently finished a book with a lot of words I didn't know, but I didn't feel too bad because it was set in the 1400s and used a lot of obscure words and archaisms. I think effective communication no matter your span of vocabulary is what matters, like you said.
