My favorite Anton Chekhov's short story

What are you reading during long long cold winter evenings sittting comfortably in your old armchair near the firespace?

Sure you have a couple ( or even a dozen ) your favorite book-friends and so nice to talk to them leisurely during those hours.

You know each other well enough already for some years and it is not a talk to know something new, but rather think , dream, remember again.

When I have time like this I like reading the same Chekhov's short stories again and again.

And the one I read the most is "The Gooseberry".

Can't say you exactly why . Even more, I did not like it at all first time. It was not fun as I expected ( oh, those young years) and I forgot about it for some time.

But now when I read it in may be for the 50th time I feel every word of it.

Chekhov is famous for telling big things through very regular and even prosaic small details. Something here, then something there . Nothing very secial , but that is the trick. Suddenly you see the whole picture in each and every detail.

It is the story about dreaming about something for the whole life and then receive it. And only after some years I realised that it is also about another brother who also dreamed for the whole life about his dream but never could get it.

All the story somehow has the taste of Jägermeister, it is bitter and gives you warm feeling inside the same time

So if you have some long cold evenings ahead try next time this story And do it better by small sips

What are you reading during long, long cold winter evenings sittting comfortably in your old armchair near the firesplace?

Sure you have a couple ( or even a dozen ) of your favorite book-friends and it's so nice to talk to them leisurely during those hours.

You know each other well enough already for some years and it is not a talking to know something new, but rather to think , dream, remember again.

This one is tricky to explain... You can say something like "I read Chekhov's short stories", but you can also make "Chekhov short stories" into its own noun phrase. Because you used "the same," it should be followed by the noun phrase version.

And the one I read the most is "The Gooseberry".

Can't saytell you exactly why .

Even more, I did not like it at all the first time (I read it).

It was not as fun as I expected ( oh, those young years) and I forgot about it for some time.

But now when I read it infor what may be for the 50th time , I feel every word of it.

Chekhov is famous for telling big things through very regular and even prosaic small details.

Something here, then something there .

Nothing very special , but that is the trick.

Suddenly you see the whole picture in each and every detail.

It is thea story about dreaming about something for the whole life and then receiveing it.

And only after some years I realised that it is also about another brother who also dreamed for thehis whole life about his dream but never could get it.

All the story somehow has the taste of Jägermeister, it is bitter and gives you a warm feeling inside at the same time

"a warm feeling" or "warm feelings" are both okay

So if you have some long cold evenings ahead, try next time this story next time.

And do it better by small sips

Feedback

Ahh, I actually have a book of 52 of Chekhov's short stories, and I've read about a third of it so far, but "Gooseberries" (Google tells me that's how it's usually translated to English) isn't in there. :( I'll have to find a copy of that one!
