My City Americana

About my city, its name is Americana.
Americana is in the state of São Paulo, in southwestern Brazil.
And there is a curiosity about his name.
First it was called Vila dos Americanos, because around 1870 there was a large number of American immigrants from the southern United States after the Civil War who came to start a new life here.
Portuguese and African slaves already lived here.
Attracted by the good climate, the fertile land and the countless farms in the region, the Confederate immigrants began to populate the lands of Vila de Santa Bárbara (neighboring city). The first to arrive was the lawyer and former senator for the state of Alabama Cel. William Hutchinson Norris.
In 1867 the rest of his family arrived in Brazil accompanied by dozens of other Confederate families.
There are several interesting facts about the Americans who lived here.
One of them was when Colonel Norris's wife died and he went to take her body to be buried in the town's cemetery.
But it was banned by the priest, as the Americans were not Catholics and at that time they were prohibited from being buried in Catholic cemeteries; atheists, Protestants, African slaves, suicides, divorced people.
Colonel Norris returned very sadly to his farm and then decided to bury his wife on his own farm.
In time, other American settlers also began to bury their relatives on the colonel's farm.
Then came the American Cemetery, where every year the descendants gather to have a confederate party.
Another curiosity was in 1972, the ex-president Jimmy Carter, then governor of the state of Georgia at the time, came to Brazil to visit this cemetery and meet the descendants.
The foundation of Americana is not credited to the Confederates, but their contribution to the progress of the city and the region is indisputable.
