Middle School Graduation Exam

After we (my classmates and teachers) arrived in my home county town, we checked in at a private hotel. It was raining. The next day we were going to attend the middle school graduation exam. The exam was going to last for three days.

We needed to test nine subjects, which were Chinese, maths, English, politics, history, geography, physics, chemistry and biology.

These subjects counted different scores. Chinese and mathematics each counted 100 scores, English counted 50 scores, politics, history and geography together counted 100 scores, so did physics, chemistry and biology. The maximum score for the nine subjects in total was 450.

When we did the test papers, we were monitored by three invigilators. One was in the front of the classroom, another was in the rear of the classroom and the third one was in the middle of the classroom.

We didn't dare to plagiarize. The outcome of it was that we would be stopped from continuing to take the exam and our scores for this exam would be zero.

I had a question on my Chinese test paper that I didn't know. The question asked me to write down a poet's name for a famous Chinese poem. I knew that poet’s name, which was right on the tip of my tongue at the moment, but I just couldn't say it out.

I tried hard to figure it out. Accidentally, I saw the poet’s name on the test paper of the student who sat in front of me from the space between his right elbow and his body.

This question only counted for one score. It was also the only score in this examination that I got not by myself.

About one month later, the exam scores were released. I was the number one student with 360 scores among about 200 graduates in my school.

Since I performed very well in the exam, I won the opportunity to work for the government. That was why I am a government employee now.

Thank you very much. I really appreciate all of the corrections you made. Here are some related questions: China governs Anhui province, Anhui province governs Fuyang city, Fuyang governs Taihe county, Taihe county governs Gongji town, Gongji town governs my village. The question is, can I say that Gongji is my home town, Taihe is my home county, Fuyang is my home city and so on? When I say county town/county seat, I mean the town that the county government is located in. A county in my area usually occupies an area of 1800 square kilometers. If I just say I go to Taihe county, no one will know which place in the county I really go to.

Good Job on the test! In New York, we have to take three test every year from 3rd - 8th grade in the subjects English, Math, and Science. Each test is about 3 hours long but nothing happens if you fail them lol. Though, you are more likely to go to a good school if you do well.

Thank you very much for your corrections. Here is another question: I say county-town/county-seat means the town that the county government is located in. In Chinese it’s 县城. I looked for it in my translation apps and the apps said it was county town or county seat. Each county in my area usually occupies almost 200 square kilometers, so if I say I am going to XX county, you won’t know the exact location I actually go to. So what would you address the capital town of a county?

Yes, I heard that studying in the USA feels very nice. Students have more time to do things that they like, and don’t have much stress or pressure. But in China, students have to face the opposite of what students face in the USA.

Sorry, I had never seen these words before. I looked at them and it seems "county town" is extremely British and "county seat" is used in other countries. I'm not interested politics, so I don't know or care about which town is "county seat" in America. I think this is the same for most Americans. It is more common to just say you live in a town unless you live in the capital of your province/state.

You could write:
"I live in XX town, which is the (administrative / political) capital of XX county."
But, I'm not sure if this is entirely correct.

If I wanted to say what county a town is in I would say, "I live in..."
"the town of Hempstead, in Nassau County" or
"the town of Islip of Suffolk County in New York" or
"a village called Freeport in the town of Hempstead of Nassau County, NY"
