I think it's too strong to say that "complements" means that something completes something else. I think it would be more accurate to say that it works/goes well together with something - complementary colours for instance don't complete each other - they just look good together.
I think you should treat "complimentary" as an entirely separate word to "compliment" and not as a variation of it. I wouldn't associate one with the other
