I think you can use either! Had vs. have had is just past tense vs. present tense.

I had watched some website about it but the wayvideo online about self-discipline, but the explanation/solution was unclear. OR I had tried reading an article on self-discipline, but they explained isnation was pretty unclear.

As a person who has been living in America my whole life, I don't really know how to explain how to distinguish between had or have had. Some situations just call for it, so I would get a lot of appropriate sentences and gradually learn the distinction that way. I would say though that anything that has relevance to the present day calls for "have had". So like if I am really stressed about school work, I would say "I have had a really hard time with schoolwork lately" instead of "I had a really hard time with schoolwork" because it is a problem that still has an active role in my life.
