“Look before you leap” or “He who hesitates is lost” ?

“Look before you leap” means you should think twice before making decisions, and “ He who hesitates is lost” means you should not hesitate to do what you think is right. They contradict to each other, because the former says you should be careful, while the latter says you should not. The former is suited for me, because I often make poor decisions, and regret afterward.
