Last night when I was walking home, I spotted a few dogs standing together on the corner of the street. I was hoping that they would be gentle enough to kindly let me pass by. As I got closer, they started to make noises. I had this peculiar feeling that they would attack me if I walked by them, so I decided to move around. Then, I looked around to make sure they weren't chasing me, but to my surprise they were coming towards me. For a moment, I was frozen, not knowing what to do.
Luckily as I was pacing, I saw some men leaning on their cars and chatting. They realized what was going on the moment they saw me walking hastily. They threw stones at the dogs to fend them off. They even looked closely to make certain the dogs were gone. Their presence in that dark, cold night was like a miracle to me.
I'm truly grateful to the gentlemen who helped me last night. I can't imagine what would've come of me without their being there.
Occasionally, I come across good men; I mean the real good ones, like the man who paid for my taxi fair when he heard me telling the taxi driver that I had left my wallet at home, or the man at the bus station who gave up his seat to me on a hot summer day. They weren't showing off as I wasn't going to meet them over again. After all, gentlemen don't show off.
Good men are rare and much appreciated.

"this" is correct too, but "a" might sound more natrual.

"Pacing" is usually slow, thoughtful walking back and forth, so might not be the right word in this situation.
