"Limelight" 2

The story is as follows:　

The main character called Calvero was the best clown in England in the early 1900s. After he reached middle age, he spent his days drinking alcohol because of his declining fame. One day, he helped a beautiful ballet dancer named Terry when she was about to commit suicide in her flat, next to his. Calvero cared for her devotedly and got her back into ballet again, even though she was completely disappointed and had lost the will to live. After she started dancing again, Terry got a job as a dancer and was luckily selected as the prima donna for a new ballet. Meanwhile, Calvero failed to make a comeback, and was instead encouraged by Terry.

The composer Neville, who selected Terry as the prima, fell in love with Terry and confessed his love to her. However, she had feelings for Calvero. Terry asked Calvero to marry her. Calvero, comparing their age difference and his own circumstances to Terry's current smooth sailing life, refused the marriage proposal as ridiculous. Calvero left her and fell into the role of street musician. After breaking up with Calvero, Terry received rave reviews in performances across Europe. Meanwhile, World War I began, and Neville was sent off to fight in the war. When Neville returned to London, he tried to woo Terry, but she still couldn’t forget Calvero.

One day, Terry ran into Calvero on a street corner and arranged for him to perform on stage once more. The audience gave Calvero an enthusiastic welcome in his comeback performance and an overwhelming round of applause. However, Calvero fell off the stage and suffered a heart attack. He took his last breath while watching Terry dance in the brilliant limelight.

ストーリーは次の通りです。

主人公のカルヴェロは、1900年代初頭のイギリスで最高の道化師でした。中年になってから、名声の衰えから酒に溺れる日々を送っていました。ある日、カルヴェロは、隣のアパートで自殺しようとしていた美しいバレエダンサーのテリーを助けました。テリーは完全に失望し、生きる意欲を失っていましたが、カルヴェロは献身的に彼女を世話し、再びバレエの世界に戻してやります。テリーは再び踊り始めた後、ダンサーとしての仕事を得て、幸運にも新しいバレエのプリマドンナに選ばれました。一方、カルヴェロは復帰に失敗し、代わりにテリーに励まされ流ようになりました。

テリーをプリマに選んだ作曲家のネヴィルはテリーに恋をし、愛を告白しました。しかし、テリーはカルヴェロに想いを寄せていました。テリーはカルヴェロに結婚を申し込みましたが、カルヴェロは、年齢差と自分の境遇をテリーの今の順風満帆な生活と比較し、このプロポーズを馬鹿げていると断ります。カルヴェロは彼女のもとを去り、ストリートミュージシャンに身を落とします。カルヴェロと別れた後、テリーはヨーロッパ各地で公演を行い、絶賛されました。一方、第一次世界大戦が始まり、ネヴィルは戦争に派遣され、ある時ロンドンに戻ったネヴィルはテリーを口説こうとしたが、彼女はまだカルヴェロを忘れられませんでした。

ある日、テリーは街角でカルヴェロに偶然出会い、再び舞台に立つよう手配します。観客はカルヴェロの復帰公演に熱狂的な歓迎と圧倒的な拍手喝采を送りました。しかし、カルヴェロは舞台から落ちて心臓発作を起こし、テリーが輝かしい脚光を浴びて踊るのを見ながら息を引き取りました。
