Library
I made a post about library books yesterday.
And I thought that the usage of the library might be different in foreign countries.
Public libraries in Japan look like this.
People who live or work in the area can borrow books for free.
The return period is 2-3 weeks.
If you don't return the item for a long time after the expiration date, you will receive reminder emails, phone calls, postcards, etc.
There is no charge for being overdue, but there may be penalties such as not being able to borrow other books.
My Filipina English teacher told me that if I overdue a library book, I would need a small late payment fee.

I also have a late item I need to return to my library. Thanks for the reminder! It's a DVD which I somehow keep forgetting to return. I've received reminder emails about it but no phone calls or anything else. I also don't have to pay a late fee so I feel extra bad for not returning it.

To answer your question: It depends.
The late fee is traditional, but many libraries are switching over to alternative options. At my childhood library, I think it was $.25/per day overdue. Later, that library switched over to a different plan, where there were no late fees but if the book was over 30 days late, it was marked as lost and you had to buy a new one. If you did not pay that fee, they would send you to collections. Many libraries are switching to this system to encourage more people to read and prevent people from being afraid of the library.
At my current library, I'm not sure if they charge late fees or not. They automatically renew all the books I read as long as no one else is waiting for them. So far, I haven't had a late fee at this library despite several renewal periods.
