Leopards

I have loved leopards since I was a child. I find their spotted fur with the different white, yellow and black tones astonishingly beautiful. Their strength, stealth movements and muscular power that can be put into action within fractions of a second contribute to my amazement.

Leopards are the smallest members of the “big cats” family, with a weight ranging from only 25 to 90 Kg in very big males. Their high adaptability has allowed them to dwell in very different habitats and that has a big influence on their weight. Specimens living in deserts or very barren areas tend to achieve lower weights, whereas the biggest ones are normally to be found in dense forests in Africa. In these habitats they don’t have to compete with hyenas and lions and, therefore, they are at the summit of the food chain. Due to that, these big leopards spend more time directly on the ground as well.

Although those forest leopards could weigh up to 90 Kg, they are by no means the same size as their big cousins. Tigers could achieve more than 300 Kg (Siberian tigers); lions more than 200 Kg. Jaguars, the biggest cats in America, range up to 150 Kg. Even cougars, that technically don’t belong to the same family as leopards (cougars don’t roar but they meow), achieve more impressive sizes than leopards. Big mountain cougars can be on the range of 110 – 115 Kg, nevertheless average specimens are much smaller (an average weight of about 50 - 60 Kg).

The competition with other predators is especially high in African savanna. There leopards have to deal with lions, hyenas, cheetahs and wild dogs. Cheetahs are no problem, then they are weaker and smaller than leopards. Lions are definitely stronger. A lonely big hyena could be a big deal, but normally they hunt in packs, so fight them is no option. Wild dogs are also weaker and smaller than leopards, but they live in big packs, so they are to be feared as well.

Due to that leopards make good use of trees when living in the savanna. They climb onto trees after hunting to put their prey safe from hyenas and wild dogs, then they cannot climb. This method doesn’t always work against lions, since they are able to climb. Trees are as well a safe place to rest and to seek refuge, due to the aforementioned reasons. Lions can sometimes try to follow leopards up on the trees, but normally with small success. The spotted big cat is much more skilled to climb.
