In today's lesson, my teacher asked me about fashion in my twenties. I talked with her about two fashions, but I didn't do well in the conversation because the topic involved many new words.
Now I want to write about them. I think I may write them better than I talked during the lesson because I have enough time and I can correct my writing repeatedly.
One fashion was a hair style called "大背头" for men. At that time, barbers didn't have professional tools for doing this hair style. But they all had a briquette stove in their shops.
When they did the hair style, they put a tong in the stove to heat it. In the meantime, they put a kind cream on people's hair. When the tong became very hot, they used the tong and other tools to do people's hair.
I had my hair done this way a few times. When they were doing my hair, I could feel the heat from the tong and I was scared that the tong might touch my head skin. I could also hear sizzling and smell a special scent from my hair. During the process, I felt very scared. Now, thinking of this, I feel I was very stupid.
Another fashion was wearing bell-bottoms, which were very popular among young people. It seemed like whose bell-bottom was wide, who was cooler.
My teacher told me that bell-bottoms are still popular in the United States nowadays while they are not as popular as they used to be in China.
Chinese has an old saying "奶奶的衣服最流行" (grandma’s clothes are the most popular), I think it is true sometimes.
I also learned 抬杠 in English. Be always opposing sb. Be always disagreeing with sb.
Recalling what I did in my youth, I feel that it was ridiculous. Do you have something you did in your youth that you regret now?

more natural: It seemed like the wider your bell-bottoms, the cooler you were.

I’ve never seen any of my own kids—who are 26, 19 and 17—or their friends wearing bell-bottoms, so they don’t seem popular to me. 🤷

Correct, but you can say "fashion trend" instead of just fashion. This could apply to the above sentences too.

When they did the hair style, they put a tong in the stove to heat it.
In the meantime, they put a kind cream on people's hair.

"head skin" can also be "scalp".

Now, thinking of this, I feel I was very stupid.
