Layoffs in Tech Industry

Winter is coming for the tech industry. Tech companies have been announcing an alarming number of layoffs recently: Twitter cut off almost 50% of its workforce, and Meta is reported to announce its layoff this week. There are rumors that other big tech companies, including Google, Amazon, and Microsoft, are joining the list. Everyone in the tech industry feels the gloomy outlook. Are there any warning signs before massive layoffs? As an employee, how should we deal with it?

To answer those questions, we invited ABC and CBA from XXX School to our Thursday meetup this week. They will talk about how to prepare before and after layoffs. Ken will focus on why a company would cut jobs, warning signs, and the process of layoffs. Cindy will share her experience preparing after a layoff, including maintaining immigration status, job hunting, and mental constructs. The two guests will be happy to answer questions from our audience.

As an employee, how should we deal with ithem?

I assume “it” meant “layoffs.”

oftentimes "John Doe" or "Jane Doe" are used as placeholder names for people who want to remain anonymous

also i suppose this is more a commentary on the text than your english - did you mean an actual school, or a college/university? it seems weird to interview schoolkids about tech industry layoffs?

They will talk about how to prepare before and after layofflayoffs and deal with them afterwards.

you cannot prepare after something, preparation implies doing something in advance of something else.

Ken will focus on why a company would cut jobs, warning signs, and the process of layoffs.

no real point censoring them as ABC if you post their names here, eh? :)

Cindy will share her experience preparing after a laybeing laid off, including maintaining immigration status, job hunting, and dealing with mental constructs.

same as before - can't prepare after something. although, if you wanted to refer to dealing with massive layoffs in general, regardless of if you got fired or not (dealing with being fired and/or dealing with losing all of your co-workers) then my correction would be incorrect, as it only refers to being fired. to mean everything possible, you'd use the correction I gave before (dealing with layoffs.)

in the list you gave at the end, you need a verb for the last item. you had a verb at the start of the list, but that only applied to item 1. (maintaining status) that verb can't apply to item 2 or 3, because item 2 didn't need a verb as it was one in itself, and item 3 doesn't make sense with the verb (maintaining mental constructs?), so 3 needs its own verb.

also 'mental constructs" is a bit odd - i don't entirely know what it means, I think it could refer to prejudices surrounding being unemployed? I would say "discrimination" or "prejudices" instead.

just sounds more natural imo - we know who the guests are now, so we can use these instead of a slightly more vague "the"
