高校生のころ、『メモワール・オブ・ゲイシャ』という映画がすごく好きでした。
たぶん、日本人なら聞いたことがあると思います。
でも、昨日、日本ではその映画があまり人気がないことを知りました。日本の文化の描写が間違っていて、岩崎峰子さんの話も間違っていたそうです。今度、岩崎峰子さんの本当の話を書いた本を買って読んでみたいです。
When I was in high school, I really loved the movie "Memoirs of a Geisha."
I think most Japanese people have probably heard of it.
But yesterday, I found out that the movie isn’t very popular in Japan. Apparently, its portrayal of Japanese culture is inaccurate, and the story of Mineko Iwasaki is also incorrect.
I’d like to buy and read a book that tells Mineko Iwasaki’s true story sometime soon.

『SAYURI』は観ましたが、日本人から見たらひどいです。日本の映画を撮るならやはり、日本人の監督、役者、スタッフを揃えて忠実に描いてほしいです。

I agree that we cannot accept the novel or the film, because a geisha is not a prostitute. Geisha are artists who are trained for many years in traditional Japanese culture — including elegant dance, refined hospitality, conversation skills, and the ability to entertain guests with grace.
In Japan, there was a legal system for prostitution before the war, but geisha were never part of that system. People who visited geisha houses were usually noble families, successful businesspeople, or political figures who wanted to build good relationships while enjoying traditional meals and high‑level cultural entertainment performed by geisha.
Because of this, I never watched the film. I already sensed that it misunderstood Japanese traditions and lacked real knowledge of our culture. We see similar problems in Puccini’s opera Madama Butterfly: not only the story of a Japanese woman abandoned by a Western man, but also the inaccurate and sometimes disrespectful way Japanese culture is shown, such as the improper way the kimono is worn.
So I fully understand why Mineko Iwasaki was angry about the novel and the film.
However, if you watch the movie simply as fiction — without expecting cultural accuracy — it may still be enjoyable. I think many people appreciate the film here too.

It's always disappointing to see someone's culture being misrepresented or disrespected in media. Reinforcing negative stereotypes and spreading misinformation isn't something to be taken lightly, and yet somehow things like this still happen even today. Thankfully, I think it's getting better, but there's always work to be done.

In general, many Japanese people are not as sensitive to cultural stereotypes as people from some other countries might be.
In the more than ten years I lived in Germany, I only encountered something that felt like a stereotype once — during a family trip to Milan, when a group of students made a “slanted‑eyes” gesture at us. I didn’t take it personally; I just thought they were uninformed. And the reason I still remember it is simply because it was the only time it ever happened.
Most people I met were genuinely interested in Japan and very respectful of our culture.
So please feel comfortable sharing your thoughts — I never felt anything negative from your message and I believe other members here also appreciate your respectful attitude.
