It may have been the first year in middle school, when my class had music classes.

The music teacher's name is Li Chengsi, a young man. In every music class, he taught us to sing songs while he played an organ.

At the beginning of every class, he let a student who sung the best lead us to sing a song before he taught us a new song.

The two songs we sung the most were "A Big River" and "The Spring Water on the Frontier is Clear and Pure".

When we sang "A Big River", the leading singer was always one of my female classmates. She sat on my left. She had a very beautiful voice which I thought was very suitable for this song.

"At the beginning of every class" means a habit, so we use present tense for habits.

I assume that student can still sing well, if you use past tense then that means that student can't sing well now.
e.g. I knew how to play chess (I know how to play chess before but maybe I forgot now)
I know how to play chess (a general truth which I know how to play chess even now)
And usually, we use present tense before the word "before", "after", "when" and many more
e.g. He talked to someone before he teaches me (can't think of an example but I think you understand:))
