My home village is located in Taihe county, Fuyang city, Anhui Province, China. When I was a kid, there were about twenty-eight families in my village. Probably every family had three to five children, so there were about 180 people in our village. At that time, the countryside was still poor, we didn't even have enough food to eat, and our clothes were old and shabby. It was very popular that young children were wearing the clothes that the old child left. When winter came, we didn't even have cotton-padded clothes. As a child, the happiest things for us were Chinese New Year because when it came, we could get new clothes and eat steamed buns with wheat flour. And on New Year's Eve, we could set off firecrackers. There were a lot of things about the countryside at that time but I cannot remember them all now.

It was very popularcommon that young children were wearing the clothes that thean older child left.

Common usually means standard/habitual, where as popular more means trendy/fashionable/preferred

For your knowledge, these types of clothes are usually referred to as "hand me downs".

When winter came, we didn't even have cotton-paddinsulated clothes.

cotton padded isn't a term in English. I tried to come up with what I think you mean.

As a child, the happiest things for us wereas Chinese New Year because when it came, we could get new clothes and eat steamed buns with wheat flour.

You have only listed one item, so it is singular, not plural. Thus, we use was instead of were.

And oOn New Year's Eve, we could set off firecrackers.

Generally we don't start sentences with the word and. It is considered incorrect.

There were a lot of things about the countryside at that timeback then, but I cannot remember them all now.

yours is correct, this is just a more standard suggestion
