China is so big and different regions have different traditions. For instance, in the north of China, people have a tradition of eating dumplings when it is winter solstice. At winter solstice, the weather is cold and it’s also the day with the longest night. After that day, the night will get shorter and shorter, and the day will get longer and longer. But why do people eat dumplings when winter solstice comes? It is said that this is associated with an ancient famous doctor, Zhang Zhongjing, eastern Han dynasty people. His highest official position was Changsha prefect. But later, he abandoned an official to become a doctor. On the way he went to his hometown Nanyang, he saw that many people on both sides of the Bai river had their ears frozen. In winter solstice, he asked his disciples to set up a medical shed on the east gate of Nanyang. He and his disciples set up a big pot and bought some mutton and Chinese medicine. First, boil the mutton to make soup, then cut the mutton and Chinese medicine and mix them together to make dumplings. When the soup and the dumplings were all cooked well, they assigned every poor person one bowl of soup and three dumplings. People who ate the medicine foods got their frozen ears cured. This is what I heard about the origin of eating dumplings in the winter solstice. Is it interesting?
