My family was poor when I was young. As far as I can remember, I didn’t have any toys except a fish key pendant my aunt gave me. At that time, every family had some wooden buckets, and they were put together with two iron hoops. When the bucket was worn out, the iron hoops became our toys. We would find a piece of thick iron wire and make a groove on one end of the wire, then we could push the iron hoop forward with the iron wire. Because roads were not paved then, it was easy to fail to do this when you were a beginner, so you needed to do that more carefully. We would push the iron hoops forward for a long distance without failure until we got sweaty, and felt very excited. The other day when I visited Jinzhai County, I saw the toys at a souvenir store, but they weren’t the ancient ones. It was made exquisitely, and the hoops were made with smooth round iron wire instead of a flat hoops that used to fix the wooden bucket. Although the toy is nice, I have already lost my passion for playing it. Have you played this in your childhood? Can you guys tell us what kind of toys you guys played when you were a kid?

No problem! I will try to explain. First, I changed the word "ancient" because ancient means hundreds or even millions of years ago.
"way back when" is an informal idiomatic phrase. I can give examples of how to use it if that will help you understand it. Simply said, though, it means "long ago" - 很久以前.
You could also just use "long ago": "They weren't like the ones from long ago"
