A Surprise for a Friend

At the church where I go to, we have a friend who has long time that he hasn't gone to the church.

So, today it's his birthday and the young members, the leadership and I have a surprise for him. We made a cake and we'll give him the cake in the evening.

I hope the cake and our friendship may raise his spirit because he has passed some difficulties in these days. So, never is so bad that your friends will give you a visit.

Troubles and difficulties always comes but one of the best ways to help other people to take on them is accompanying them when we can.

- Note: I don't know a correct phrasal verb for "accompany" in this context. If someone can give me one, it will be helpful for me. Thanks.

I think there are several ways you can express the idea of "accompany them when we can", but accompany is probably not correct, because it is too distant and formal. You accompany your boss to the meeting, or accompany someone on a hospital visit, but when seeing a friend, you could try: "visit them when we can" "see them when we can" "be with them when we can" "meet up with them when we can"
