The last person I contacted was my brother. When I returned my parent's home last week, I couldn't meet him because he went out to eat lunch. So I mailed him that I would go again on this weekend. Today we met and he made an espresso for me.

(2) Alternatively: "I couldn't meet him because he was out for lunch." In this case, the past perfect is not expected because it is not an event, but rather a state of being which occurs at the same time as your visit.
So I mailed and told him that I would go again on this weekend.

'to return to' you need to put the preposition in. Need to pluperfect for 'had gone out' as it is past of the past.
