The other day, I read an interesting post on SNS. The story was as follows.
On one evening, the writer went for a long walk to the beach nearby his home as usual. On his way back, he chose the same alley as he had passed by some time ago. However, as the night fell, it turned totally dark and seemed to be quite a strange place. He imagined to himself as if he had been acting in a horror movie and thought that this could be the right time and place to be ambushed. At that moment, he noticed a quirky shadow approaching him ahead. He froze at the sight: it seemed to have several lanky arms and legs and walked clumsily. The next moment, he realized that a small man, holding three stacked chairs in his arms, was toddling on the alley. He instantly spoke to himself, “Oh, please do not walk in such a way at such a dark night.” He concluded the story with the following phrase, “Shadows can make us play games in our mind.”
After reading this post, I was really impressed by his high imagination. Also, this reminded me of a Japanese saying, that is “疑心暗鬼”, which means that suspicion will raise bogies. In fact, he was scared to see a strange shadow in the total darkness and doubted that it might be a kind of monster or something. I think that darkness and uncertainty can sometimes make us doubtful and timid, leading to misunderstanding or misdeed. Anyway, I think he has a knack for finding the small, everyday things to be interesting and thought-provoking.
