Test and examinations are central feature of school systems in many countries. Do you think the educational benefits of testing outweigh any disadvantages.
----------------------------------------------------
Before the industrial revolution, proper education was only available for high class people. After the revolutio, middle and low class mass could access education. When the number of students increased, educational system needed a method for giving equal information to every students a measure the knowledge of them. This model created the basis of the test and examination system, that today used in many countries.
The education system in 1900s focused mainly how to manage increasing population of students without dispute and preparing them for working in fabrics. The examination aimed only measure the information, that students could memorize. This means student could have extraordinary gift for painting but still could be unsuccessful at school, because he/she could not solve mathematic problems.
Tis issue get bigger with time and ministries of education of different countries attempted to overcome this. Scandinavian countries are well known instances of good examination and school system. There is no examination in elementary schools and school system centering the emotional development of children, there is also no university exam, this keeps teenagers away stress and give them time to develop their personality. Students and parents in other countries compare the examination systems and criticize it.
There is no doubt in my mind that examination system should change, but I also cannot give an alternative for measure the knowledge of students objectively. I think, the method Scandinavian countries currently using not fits to all countries. The demographic structure of most of them are similar and population is low. I think their method is not suitable for countries, that has overpopulation, low educational level and unstable schooling system. This countries need an objective general examination system.
In conclusion, examination system is criticized in pas decades and it continues. Different countries attempting to change this old fashion educational measuring system with different solutions there is still no one size model that suitable for all countries, because of it testing system remains in most of the countries.
