A turn up for the books - a thing that was truly remarkable and surprising. I sort of think of it as if you're suggesting (although not seriously) that whatever happened should be written down in books.
On tenterhooks - waiting with great nervousness or anticipation for something to happen.
Very idiomatic, but both used entirely correctly.
