I learned the new word "boardwalk" and I'd like to use it.
There's a nice park that has a big pond near my house, and there's a boardwalk on the pond.
I like to walk on it.
However, sometimes I think what if I drop my phone in the water.
I've actually once dropped my camera in the ocean about 10 years ago.
At that time, I had to give up the camera.
Since then every time I walk on the boardwalk in the pond or reiver, I remember that.

"give up on" is an expression for accepting that something is lost
Examples:
I gave up on being able to become an astronaut
I dropped my wedding ring into the volcano, and gave up on ever getting it back.
Since then every time I walk on the boardwalk in the pond or reiver, I remember that.

There are actually two uses of "boardwalk" and I'd say this is the less common one. I actually didn't know this specific meaning of the word, so thank you for teaching me :)
Your "boardwalk" is the one you can see in the gallery section of this wikipedia page https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Boardwalk which is a path made of boards used for walking over water.
More commonly in the US, "boardwalk" will mean a section of waterfront in a city which is full of entertainment and tourist attractions. For example, the Santa Cruz Boardwalk in California even has a roller coaster on it. https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Boardwalk_(entertainment_district)
