How to count a four-digit number

I am not 100% sure, but I feel that there are two ways to count a four-digit number.

For example, when we count 2972 in English, we say 2 thousand, 9 hundred, and seventy-two. This is a way that we learned at school.

However, I often hear a newscaster saying twenty-nine hundred, seventy-two.

I wonder if both of them are the right ways to count.

How to count aread/say four-digit numbers

I am not 100% sure, but I feelthink that there are two ways to count a four-digit number.

For example, when we countsay 2972 in English, we say 2two thousand, 9 nine hundred, and seventy-two.

This is athe way that we learned at school.

However, I often hear a newscasters saying twenty-nine hundred, seventy-two.

I wonder if both of them are the right ways to count.

Feedback

Yeah, those are both right. "Twenty-nine seventy-two" is more natural than "twenty-nine hundred seventy-two." However, we would read "2300" as "twenty-three hundred" for example.

I don't know if it's technically correct to say "twenty-nine seventy-two," but it's very very natural and much more common than reading out the full number. It's just faster to say, I think, haha.

I see!
"twenty-nine seventy-two" is definitely much faster than reading out the full number.
No wonder newscasters often choose this way to count four-digit numbers.
Thank you so much, Sasha san!

Oh - one more thing! If you're reading out a much larger number, for example 12 325, you always read it out in full: "twelve thousand three hundred (and) twenty-five."

No problem! I'm happy to help!
