I speak several foreign languages like Esperanto, Spanish and Italian. I have some basics about German. The most difficult language to me is English. It's pronunciation, first, is the most challenging. Every language I know has precise rules allowing to lean on the writing to practice the language. With English you can't do that. You have to learn how the language is pronounced and then you can learn how it is spelled without trying to understand any connections between both. Sometimes there are. Too many times, the spelling doesn't give you any clue about the pronunciation.
Besides there vowel nuances I can't perceive. My English friends told me that the words “hold” and “hauled” weren't pronounced the same. But when they pronounce them, I can't hear any difference! To be honest, after a series of repetition I can hear a very slight difference and I can reproduce it but I'd need to practice a lot harder to be able to hear and pronounce these words clearly in a spontaneous speech.
