Every year after sweet potatoes were harvested, there were still some of them remaining under the soil of the farmland.
A very exciting thing for us children was to dig out the sweet potatoes.
We carried a basket and a shovel and went to the sweet potato farmland. Our secret to finding a sweet potato was to find a stem outside of the soil and dig followed it.
After we got a few sweet potatoes, we dug a small ditch in the field and spread the sweet potatoes horizontally on it. Then found some crop straw, put the straw inside the ditch and burned the straw to bake the sweet potatoes.
When the sweet potatoes' color became dark, they were almost done. We stopped burning, pushed the sweet potatoes inside the ditch and covered them with a thick layer of soil.
Ten or twenty minutes later, we could eat the delicious baked sweet potatoes.
