Those books sexplaidn different things, so I was which make me more confused.

ThenSo I decided to use more honorifics when in doubt.

NIt is because no one would be disgusted if they were treated with excessive honorifics, but manywhile the other would get mad whenif they were treated with lower levels of honorifics.

I think "so" makes sense here because there's a cause-and-effect relationship with the previous sentence.

No one would be disgusted if they weare treated with excessive honorifics, but many would get mad when they weare treated with a lower level of honorifics.

"When they were" sounds like an event that happened in the past. However "if they were" could be interpreted as a hypothetical situation. So this sentence would also make sense:
"No one would be disgusted if they were treated with excessive honorifics, but many would get mad if they were treated with a lower level of honorifics."
