A few (many, actually) years ago I heard an Indecent joke. Although I don’t know, may it be normal? You know all those things – curses and pious guys, hypocrites etc. I suppose it's a bit vulgar. So, a disclaimer – if it will offence you, you would not have to read following.
A theatre. People are taking seats. Noises are subsiding. Light is dimming. One more moment and it’s dark and silent. Audience is waiting. Then a person is going on the stage. The person is bearing a lighting candle and a chair. On the middle of the stage, the person puts the chair and the candle on the stage, sit down (on the chair) and starts to masturbate. After a while a noise comes from the audience. The person springs on their feet, the candle upsets and goes out, the chair clatters onto the floor. In the darkness on the stage a scared voice spreads, “WHO IS THERE?”

In the darkness on the stage a scared voice spcreadms, “WHO IS THERE?”

"Spreads" doesn't really work here. "Screams," however, may also be too strong a word.
