Hiking Views in the Late Autumn

I uploaded a video to show you some hiking views from my last Saturday hike. You can watch it here: https://www.youtube.com/shorts/ARabvoAco1Q

Please continue to be my English teacher, and tell me all the things that I need to do better in the dubbing!

Thanks in advance!

Oh, I will not go hiking this weekend. It's cloudy these two days, and I have something to do tomorrow.

Very nice video! The sceneries are very beautiful. As for the dubbing, I would recommend shadowing some native speaker to become more familiar with their intonation and rhythm so that you can sound more native like.

“The” isn’t necessary, but it’s also not wrong.

Hi Tammy, I was thinking about your request to “be your teacher” and am wondering: are you’re looking for specific pointers on your pronunciation in your video? If so, I can provide some, but only if you want them. :-)

Ok, here you go:

1) “last Saturday “ - the “t” in “last” is too strong, sounding a little bit like “las-tuh” (two syllables) when it should be just one syllable. The “t” should not be voiced.

2) “here is what” - “here” sounds a bit like “hair”

3) “renovated temple” - the “L” in “temple” sounds a bit like a “w” (“tem-puw”), but this might just be due to an issue with the sound recording or playback

4) “stone mountains” - your pronunciation is fine, but I would suggest “stony mountains” instead

5) “made of stone without any soil surrounding it” - I would change “surrounding it” to “covering it,” based on what I see in the video

6) “soil” - the “s” sounds a bit like “sh” when it should be “s”

7) “this is the scenery” - the “i” in “this” doesn’t sound right

8) “called Jizhuaqi” - the “d” at the end of “called” is too strong, as if you’re saying “called a” (two words) instead of just one

9) “these soft” - “these” sounds like “this”

A couple of general comments/questions:

10) Are you trying for an American accent or British? Some of the “r” sounds were a bit off to my American ears, but they would probably sound just fine to a British person.

11) Have you considered uploading these videos as regular videos instead of “Shorts”? It’s harder to give feedback on the Shorts because YouTube doesn’t allow viewers to “rewind” them — the only way to re-listen to a phrase is to rewatch the entire video from the beginning, which is a bit frustrating when the phrase I want to check is near the end of the video. :-) But, of course , if you are trying to get lots of views from random YouTube users, then Shorts is still the best choice because of how the YouTube algorithm works these days. :-)

Thank you so much for such detailed feedback! I learned a lot from it.

I'm not trying for a specific accent. But when I started to learn English at school, all our books and learning materials were from the UK. In the past few years, I've watched a lot of TV series from the USA, so I think I've also been influenced by the American accent.

About the type of my videos, actually, they were automatically classified. I guess most of them were so short that they were classified as "shorts" after uploading.

Maybe I can find some topics to make longer videos.

I totally understand about the mixture of accents. My accent in Chinese is mostly a Taiwanese one, as you’ve already heard, but I do mix in some other accents now & then. 😁

Oh, I think if you upload vertical videos (where the dimensions are taller than they are wide), then YouTube automatically classifies them as “shorts” unless they’re longer than three minutes, but if you upload a horizontal video—even a short one—then you can choose whether you want it to be posted as a regular video or automatically cropped into vertical format and posted as a short.

Do you record your videos in vertical format, or edit them into vertical videos afterwards? I mostly do mine horizontal, but I like the vertical ones you’ve been posting recently, too.

By the way, I love your timing in this latest video, where you talk about the yellow light on the “reed flowers,” and right as you say the word “sunshine,” the video cuts to an image of the sun. Very nice!

Thank you so much!

I don't know why, but most of the videos on my phone were captured vertically. Maybe it's just a habit, unconscious.

Rewording the sentence to sound more natural, but the original sentence is correct.

I watched your dub and it was good! There was just one typo where the text said "dreams" instead of "streams".

Yes, I just found it! But I can't correct it because the text was added to the video by the editing app.
