TV broadcasts high-school baseball games live almost every day. When I was a junior high school student, the players in those games all seemed like “big brothers” to me. When I became a high school student, they felt more like “quasi-classmates.” Now that I’m older, I see them as “people born after me.”
These 17-year-olds dedicate themselves to a demanding sport like baseball. It is a life I never lived.
Making it to Koshien Stadium is already extremely difficult. Becoming a professional baseball player is even tougher. Only a small handful make it that far. Japan’s population is said to be shrinking, but competition has always been fierce in fields like this.
I also think about the players who could not make the regular team. I wonder what kind of lives they will lead from here. I hope all of their futures will be bright.
