How people harvested their wheat in the old days.
My childhood was in the 70's. Back then, the farmland belonged to our production team, not to every single family. All the team members were our villagers.
Our main crops were wheat, sweet potatoes, corn and soybeans. Today I'd like to talk about how we harvested wheat at that time.
The wheat harvest season usually started at the end of May. Before that, the villagers would do some preparing work.
On the 18th of lunar April, (around the middle of solar May) there was a traditional trading affair that lasted for three days every year in my hometown.
On the Affair, villagers would buy some tools for harvest use, such as straw hats, sickles, wooden shovels, and so on.
The first thing would be making a threshing floor. Villagers would choose a field on their farmland, and then spread wheat straw that was left last year evenly on it. Wet the field; used a stone roller to compact the ground to make it solid, even and seamless.
The villagers used sickles to harvest wheat and took it to the threshing-floor by man-power carts.
On the threshing fields, people used cattle to pull stone rollers to roll on the wheat to thresh.
Because the harvest methods were so primitive, harvesting wheat was really tough work, and people had to do it day and night.
Sometimes, if it rained often, the whole process would last over a month. The worst thing was that the wheat sprouted because of the high temperature and the humid air.
However, the situation has already changed. Nowadays, harvesting wheat can be done within only two or three days because of the application of advanced agricultural machinery, especially the application of the large combine harvester.
