If you're renting your place and it's part of a larger structure then it's an apartment. If it's a stand-alone building then it's a house. Balconies definitely aren't considered essential for apartments in the US. I didn't have one anywhere that I've rented. But I suppose Chinese people probably use them to dry laundry.

According to your reply, I think the difference between the two countries is very interesting. First of all, the dwellings I described are sure to be called apartments. But the balcony is indeed essential for every apartment in China because the majority of people in China live in this type of apartment. How can you imagine people spending their entire life in an apartment without a balcony (that means you will never see sunshine for a whole life ). Anyway, you are right. The balcony is a good place to dry your laundry in addition to sitting there enjoying the natural sunshine and winds.

You can definitely still see sunshine in American apartments, we have windows. And if I want some fresh air I usually just go for a walk outside.
