"Houji-cha" ," Roasted Green Tea"

“Houji-ch”a is a kind of Japanese tea. “Houji” means “roast”, and “cha” means “tea”. As the name shows, it is roasted and has a roasting aroma. The tea leaves and the tea are brown unlike other Japanese teas, which are green. I like houji-cha, but it’s difficult to find a good one.

Many years back, one of my friends and I had tea and sweets at a well-known Japanese-style tea shop in Mie Prefecture. We liked their tea so much that we asked the staff where we were able to get the tea leaves. She said that they planted their tea trees in their own land and that they were not on the market. Since then, I had tried to get the one that tasted like their but in vain.

Recently, another friend of mine gave me a pack of houji-cha tea bags. That was a bit pity because I believed that tea from a tea pot was better than a tea bag.

However, I tired one of the tea bags and found it as good as the one at the tea shop. I realized that I had looked down on tea bags. Now, I believe that as long as the tea is good, whether having it from a tea pot or from a tea bag doesn’t matter. I’m happy I’m able to have the tasty houji-cha from now on.
