"As a mechanic you will usually need some GCSEs (or equivalent),
normally including English and Maths, for an intermediate
apprenticeship and five GCSEs (or equivalent) at grades 9 to 4,
including English and Maths, for an advanced apprenticeship"

Could you tell me what the following words /expressions in the above text mean?
- or equivalent (what is an equivalent exam of GCSe?),
- grades 9 to 4 ( what is the grade scale for GCSE? Is it 1 to 9?

Corrections

- or equivalent (what is an equivalent exam of GCSe? ),

Different qualifications in the UK are assigned different levels, for example a university degree is level 6, GCSE's are level 2. You can read more here; https://www.gov.uk/what-different-qualification-levels-mean/list-of-qualification-levels

- grades 9 to 4 ( what is the grade scale for GCSE? Is it 1 to 9?

When I was doing GCSEs 10 years ago we only had grades (A, B etc) but I think now there is a numerical system, so 9=A*, 7/8=A etc.
