They also offered the possibily to travel abroad. Oleg craved for both of these things. Hence, already fluent in German, he applied to study English. However, the courses were already oversubscribed. He took his brother’s advice and learnt Swedish. “It is the doorway to the whole Scandinavia.” At the age of nineteen, Oleg took up cross-country running, which got him to know “Standa” Kaplan. The two of them grew close. They shared common, sceptical views on communism. Meanwhile, Oleg’s older brother, Vasili, was training to become an “illegal”. The KGB ran two kinds of spy abroad. The first worked under formal cover. They especially dealt with intelligence activities, handling high-grade information. They were usually member of the diplomatic staff, which meant they could not be prosecuted for espionage should their activities be uncovered. They could only be declared “persona non grata” and expelled. The illegals, however, travelled under false name. They were highly trained operatives and by far the best in the world. It was almost impossible for counter-intelligence agencies to detect an illegal.
