Gifted People

In the English language, a talented person is called gifted. This is a precise term: 1. nobody does obtain their talents but they receive them; 2. talented people should be grateful the same way as they receive a gift; 3. nobody deserves a talent at birth: talent is not a right but a chance. A talented person is lucky, a talentless person unlucky. John Rawls, based on duty-based ethics, argues that a society is just when the effects of chance on its citizens are minimized. A talented person does not necessarily deserve a reward as a low-talented person must not be punished due to not being lucky (not receiving gifts). In a just society, talented people should distribute their gifts to society.

A talented person does not necessarily deserve a reward as a low-talented person must, just as a person with little talent should not be punished due to not being lucky (or not receiving gifts).

In a just society, talented people should distribute their gifts to the rest of society.

First, I'd like to thank you for your correction. I think it's somewhat similar to what I've written. The Persian word which is close in meaning to talent is "estedad". It means potential literally. People have different potentials for different jobs. You can narrow the gap by working hard but it's impossible to overcome some barriers especially in artistic areas. The great Persian poet Rumi is a good example to clarify the meaning of talent to Iranians. Rumi has said his poems spontaneously and someone who actually has recorded those poems has been his pupil, not himself. He just wanted to express his feelings and what was in his mind. Nowadays, we have poets who are familiar with theories of poetry and read a lot of poems and train hard to composing good poems but, actually, their poems are not even close to Rumi's aesthetically. In terms of meaning, Rumi's poems are also far more profound than the poems of the new generation. People see this as a great difference in their talent. From what I've read about the theories of aesthetics in the west I think there is a traditional view about works of art which is very similar to what I said.

Thank you for your reply. This is a really interesting concept! How fascinating it is to study the similarities/differences between words translated across languages.
I do agree that a certain job, speciality or hobby can be a lot easier if you seem to have a natural aptitude for it, or 'gift' in that area.
What would you think about someone who is really passionate about (e.g.) poetry, but they don't seem to have a natural talent for it? Should that person pursue poetry?

I apologize for the late answer. I wouldn’t discourage that friend of mine because of two reasons. First, it’s something that he really wants to do even though he’s not very good at it. With great passion and working hard, he might become a good poet in the future, who knows? Second, it’s hard to determine if someone has a talent for something or not. How could we scientifically determine if someone is talented enough to be great at his job? It’s like those intelligent tests trying to measure the level of your intelligence quantitatively. There are a lot of flaws in those tests that don’t stand up to scrutiny. However, even though we can’t deny there is some truth to these tests, it’s not that much that we can determine someone’s future with them. I know there have been amazing people in history. I don’t believe we can justify their feats by thinking they’ve just worked hard and have been interested in what they were doing. There is something different about them. I know a great tool with which we can be aware if someone is gifted or not, and that is time. Time shows these people to us. Time shows if a work of art is a masterpiece or a theory is ground-breaking. Time can help us find these great people.
