When I was a child, I lived with my family in the countryside. Around mid autumn, all kinds of crops were being harvested.

Sweet potatoes were one of the crops that farmers largely planted every year. Like other children in my village, I liked the sweet potato harvest season so much.

After villagers harvested sweet potatoes, there were still sweet potatoes remaining in the fields. We children liked to dig the sweet potatoes out and bake them in the field to eat.

At that time, the weather had already become a little cold, and we had to wear a thick coat to stay warm.

When we children dug out the sweet potatoes and baked them, we often saw the geese in the high sky flying south. We could even hear their chirping.

They flew in the shape of a herringbone in the high sky. Somehow, I felt like they chirped a little sad. Every time we saw the geese, we knew that winter was approaching.

Because the geese flew so high, we children never knew what they really looked like. We just heard from adults that the geese were very big, and their meat was so delicious.

However, heard was just heard, we never saw a real goose, let alone eat goose meat.

Sometimes, we may hear someone saying that a goose was ill, fell from the sky and was caught by somebody, but we never knew whether or not the story was true. We just felt surprised and a little scared.

I have left the countryside for many years. Living in the city, I haven't seen geese even once.

When I was a child, I lived with my family in the countryside.

Around mid autumn, all kinds of crops were being harvested.

Sweet potatoes were one of the crops that farmers (largely) planted (in large quantities) every year.

“Largely” means “mostly.” It means they planted them most years, but not every year. I wonder if you might mean “planted in large quantities” instead.

Like other children in my village, I liked the sweet potato harvest season so much (very much).

Using “so much” in this way is OK in informal writing.

After the villagers harvested the sweet potatoes, there were still sweet potatoes remaining in the fields.

We children liked to dig the sweet potatoes out (up) and bake them in the field to eat.

At that time, the weather had already become a little cold, and we had to wear a thick coats to stay warm.

When we children dug outup the sweet potatoes and baked them, we often saw the geese high in the high sky flying south.

We could even hear their chirphonking.

They flew in the shape of a herringbone (a vee) high in the high sky.

We call that shape a “vee” (like the letter V).

Somehow, I felt like they chirptheir honking sounded a little sad.

Skeins (vees) of geese used to fly over my home every fall and spring where I grew up. One year a flock landed on the pond near my house. It felt like we’d been visited by angels, although my father wanted to shoot one for food (my mother convinced him not to).

Thank you for sharing the lovely story. Thank you for correcting my journals. In large quantities. High in the sky. Dig up. Be away from. Honk. Vee.

I think that geese honk or hiss! Although, I am not quite sure. Chirping is a bit different - it's those little whistle-like singing sounds from birds that sing. It's the short and sharp high-pitched sound.

The perfect tense kind of implies that something hasn't happened even once. :)
