My Village

My village is in the northern part of Anhui province, the central east part of China, where is a big plain, a part of the Huabei Plain.

The area that the village covered was a square shape. Around the village, there was a small river.

The village only had a single entrance, which was in the center of the south end of the village.

Entering the entrance, there was a road in the center of the village that went from the south to the north. On the two sides of the road, there were villagers' houses.

There were five rows of houses from the south to the north on each side of the road. Three houses in a row from the east to the west, and the east half and the west half of the road were symmetrical.

All the houses were bungalows which were made of adobe, earth, wooden sticks and wheat straw.

About 25 families and 140 people were in the village, so it was not a large village.

The villagers' lives were very primitive. We used cotton to make clothes, used oil lights, ate homemade plant oil, used plant ash water to wash clothes, and so on.

We went somewhere just by walking, because only a few families could afford a bike.

There was no electricity, no telephone, no TV, so we could only communicate with people by sending letters, and learning about news by listening to radios.

I lived there until I was fifteen years old, going to the city I live in now to study.

Many years have passed, and things have all changed. My village hasn't been the same village as it used to be, and I haven't been that young boy.
