Fingerhakeln

Fingerhakeln or Fingerhackeln is an activity known in Southern Germany and Austria. It is performed by two people, typically men, sitting opposite to each other on both sides of a table. The two form a hook with the middle or index finger of one hand and put it into a small leather loop. After a signal to start, they try to pull their opponent towards themselves beyond a line marked on the table. The winner is defeated if the opponent releases the loop, or if the opponent passes over the table. A Fingerhakeln match normally lasts only a few seconds, during which the competitors use all their strength, but also suffer enormous pain.

In the past, this activity was a method of dispute resolution. Today it is considered a sport with Bavarian, German and Alpine championships. For competitions, the table and stools are standardized. The German obsession of standardization obviously does not even spare this activity. Behind the sportsmen there are typically well padded men to catch them in case they fall down. Despite this, injuries are common.

You can watch on Youtube a one and a half hour recording of the 2019 German Fingerhakeln Championship. The event took place in Partenkirchen in the southernmost part of the republic. The commentator speaks in Bavarian dialect. Happy watching and have good Sunday.
