I think something is not being conveyed properly. If you never had to use English because it was not required for your duties, why were you trying to read specifications in English? I tried to fix it but I don't know if it's accurate.
note: "documentation," especially "technical documentation," is strongly associated with computer code documentation/comments. Hope that's what you meant (I assume so since "specification," another software development term, is also in there)
