Zoos can be a fantastic place where animals can live closed to humans. However several issues can arise regarding the ethics of enclosing animals in a closed space.
Firstly, not always a proper treatment can be guaranted to the animals in zoos. In last years, several cases of animal mistreatment and care neglection have been reported in zoos around the world. In a few, but extremal cases, the animals were found malnourished or even dead. A better zoo inspection should be ensured to detect, and avoid those situations.
However, to tell all the truth, these cases are not the general rule. Most zoos usually take high care commitment to their animals, not only on the feeding and living conditions, but also trying to learn about the animals to improve their lifes in captivity.
To sum up, I would say not all the zoos should be demonised, because a few cases of negligence or inattention. New paradigms of animal care in modern zoos are being carried out in zoos like Cabarceno, in the north of Spain, where animals live in a semi-freedom environment, with plenty of space imitating real habitat in nature.
