Since you haven't introduced the man before, it should be "a man" (= en man), instead of "the man" (=mannen).

Is there a rule for when to put "inte" before or after the verb?
"inte" (and other adverbs like aldrig, kanske, snabbt, etc.) come BEFORE the main verb in a subordinate clause (en bisats på svenska) unlike in a main clause (en huvudsats på svenska) where adverbs come AFTER the main verb.
Jag skulle aldrig göra det.
Jag vet att jag aldrig skulle göra det.
