Just when the Enlihtenment came (18th century), a counter Enlightenment reaction emerged . It's common to associate this with the opposition between Rousseau and Voltaire. The latter argued that reason and technology would lead to a better society. However, Rousseau thought that civilitation hides the best feelings of the human nature. This romanticism, wich would be continued by authors such as Herder and Schelling, doubted that ethic, politics, or history could be separated from their cultural and emotional roots.
This a slippery slope. Relativism and skepticism are close to this point of view. Fake News advocates sometimes think that their opinions are not simply false but are alternative facts that take into account the culture and emotions of a group, a society or a nation.

Thanks very much for your corrections. When I wrote "Rousseau thought that civilization hides the best feelings of human nature" is a little different from your correction because 'suppressed' means deleting, but 'hides' not deleting. On the other hand 'feelings' is something emotional, the word 'qualities' is more general, I think. Anyway for me to write about these details is vey difficult because my English is very poor :-)

The word 'suppress' has a couple different meanings. One is to fully subdue and halt, the other is 'to keep from being revealed, published, or circulated.' In this sense it's very close to hiding, while also implying that civilization is directly and intentionally hiding those qualities intrinsically. I changed 'feelings' to 'qualities' because 'feelings of human nature' sounds very awkward. If you wanted to sound more spiritual/emotional you might talk about the human spirit, but I think that 'the best ____ of human nature', whether that is aspects, qualities, parts, etc. are all suitable.
