Practice is the secret.

When I was 12 years old, I studied Japanese for three months in a public language program offered by my city’s education department. I learned Japanese characters called hiragana and katakana, simple words, how to write my name, and names of objects and things, but I forgot everything because I needed to dedicate myself to practicing calligraphy. At the time, however, I could not concentrate very well. Meanwhile, I was also learning to read and write in English. Since I am Brazilian and we use the Latin alphabet here, it helped us learn other Latin-based languages because the writing system is the same. However, languages from Eastern countries require daily practice to learn. Furthermore, I like how a single word can represent a graphic symbol and the beauty of Japanese calligraphy. It is difficult to write, but once you manage to write it, it is marvelous to see on paper. In short, studying Japanese challenges your creativity and thinking.
