“Embracing Defeat”

In my opinion, the most revolutionizing thing under the control of GHQ (General Headquarters) was the foundation of the new constitution and civil code. Japanese legal experts struggled to revise the conventional laws following orders from GHQ. Th elimination of the “feudalistic” family system, in which women had legally been considered inferior, succeeded in offering women freedom and the right to vote. However, nearly 80 years on, Japan has ranked 125th out of 146 countries according to the World Economic Forum’s Global Gender Gap Index 2023. The proportion of female politicians and female CEOs is especially low, and we cannot deny that Japan is still a male-dominated society. It's quite a shame that Japan is still so far behind in terms of promoting gender equality, compared to the US where female leaders like the current Vice President Kamala Harris or former US secretary of state Hillary Clinton have appeared.

This is an interesting issue to be sure. Do you find that opponents of gender equality in Japan push back on it because it's seen as Western influence?

No, I don't think so. Instead, opponents of gender equality in Japan, mainly men, might want to consider themselves superior to women. That's a kind of instinct, I think. Both men and women in Japan should be aware of this issue, gender inequality , in daily lives and speak out against it.
