Yesterday afternoon, I went to a farm in the suburbs and bought tomatoes.
I got to know this farm from a WeChat group used for marketing.
The group owner is also the farm owner. She occasionally announces when she is going to the city and asks group members what vegetables they would like and how many. Then she brings all the vegetables to a certain place in the city and waits for the members to come and pick them up.
The owner has about three to five WeChat groups for people in different districts of the city, and each group has around five hundred people.
She mainly grows tomatoes, mini watermelons, small muskmelons and cherry tomatoes.
These vegetables are very common and affordable in the food market. But why does the farm owner still have so many customers despite charging higher prices for her vegetables?
In my neighborhood, there is a food market where the same vegetables are sold at pretty reasonable prices. But we don't know where the vegetables are from, how many days have passed since they were harvested, or what measures were taken to preserve them.
For example, the tomatoes in the food market look very beautiful: same size, same red color, but they don't have the traditional tomato smell. If you cut one open, the inside is a bit dry and there are hollow spots. So it seems like these tomatoes must have been stored for a long time and processed with some chemical substances. That is horrible.
When I go to the farm, I can see her vegetables growing in the fields, as well as her workers growing, managing and picking them. I am pretty sure that the time between the vegetables being picked and consumers receiving them is no more than an hour, and during this period, the vegetables are not processed for preservation.
Every day, the food we eat has lots of problems: additives, preservatives, pesticide residues, illegal use of chemical substances and so on. It’s almost a miracle that we’ve managed to live to this day.
Now you may know why, despite the high prices, she still has so many customers.
