HOW TO USE CHINESE NUMBERS

After a preliminary understanding of the Chinese numeral system, we can use them to express percentages, fractions, decimals, multiples, and discounts in Chinese. If you are unfamiliar with the Chinese numeral system, it is strongly recommended to go through this article “HOW TO COUNT NUMBERS IN CHINESE” (https://untanglechinese.com/how-to-count-numbers-in-chinese/) first.

FRACTIONS

The pattern of fractions is the same as the percentage: Denominator分之Numerator. Unlike English, we always say the denominators first and the numerators are expressed second.

Pattern: Denominator分之Numerator.
三分之一 1/3 One-third

三分之二 2/3 Two-thirds

四分之三 3/4 Three-quarters

十分之九 9/10 Nine-tenths

DECIMAL

The decimal point in Chinese is 点. The rule of expressing decimals in Chinese is like that in English.

Pattern: Number + 点 + Number

0.5 零点五 Zero point five

6.7 六点七 Six points seven

3.45 三点四五 Three point four five

77.706 七十七点七零六 Seventy-seven point seven zero six

MULTIPLES

We use 倍 to express multiples in Chinese.

Pattern: Number+倍

两倍 Double

四倍 Four times

十倍 Ten times

苹果的价钱是香蕉的两倍。

The price of apples is double the price of bananas.

DISCOUNTS

折扣 means discount. The Chinese expression for a 10% reduction in English is 10 off or a ten percent discount. In Chinese, we say 九折, which means ninety percent of the original price.

Pattern: Number+折

七折 A thirty percent discount

九五折 A five percent discount

Do you know how to say 15% off and 20% in Chinese?

You haven’t introduced the pattern for percentage yet so this is kind of confusing.

"After gaining" can also be replaced with e.g. "With." "Chinese numeral system" is singular, so we can use "it," not "them."

“Them” is unclear here. You’d use “it” to refer to the Chinese numeral system but even that’d be a bit weird in my opinion.

I don't quite understand what this sentence means.

TWhe Chinese expression for a 10% reduction in English isreas in English you’d communicate the amount by which the item is discounted (e.g., 10% off or a ten percent discount.), in Chinese you’d do the opposite and express a percentage of the normal price (e.g., 90% the original price). Whereas in English you’d communicate the amount by which the item is discounted (e.g., 10% off), in Chinese you’d do the opposite and express a percentage of the normal price (e.g., 90% the original price).

Very interesting! My edit is clunky but hopefully it gives you a direction.

In Chinese, we say 九折, which means ninety percent of the original price.
